TSJ’s Top 10 Major League Baseball Blog Sites

TSJ’s Top 10 Major League Baseball Blog Sites

Despite the fact that the 2010 MLB season is just getting underway this week, most of us baseball fans have to resign ourselves to the notion that the year is already a lost cause – unless you happen to support a team hailing from New York, Boston or Philadelphia. The odds for ‘Winning the World Series’ have been released, and it’s no surprise that the defending champion Yankees lead the way at 3-1, with last year’s World Series’ runner-up – the Phillies – and AL East Division rival – The Red Sox – following closely behind at 6-1.

While five other cities will graciously be offered the opportunity to join those three in the postseason, TSJ now presents the Top 10 MLB Blog Sites for the rest of us fans who’ll be looking for something to keep us occupied when we’re already declared out of the playoff race after the first month of the season.

TSJ’S TOP 10 MLB BLOG SITES

10. The Ghost of Moonlight Graham

I was drawn to this site for the simple reason that I love the movie “Field of Dreams”, but I found myself sticking around longer on the site than for just a proverbial cup of coffee because author Adam Bernacchio – also a regular contributor to The Bleacher Report – does a solid job of balancing the news of the day with his own unique commentary and opinion. Just further evidence that if you build it, they will come.

9. The Chuck Knoblog
This is by far the best name of any blog site I came across in searching out this list. While some of the content and commentary may be as errant as one of Chuckie’s throws from back in the day, it’s definitely entertaining. But beware – most of the daily posts seem to revolve around Knoblauch’s former club, the ‘Evil Empire’ in New York.

8. Baseball Musings
While the layout of this site isn’t earth-shattering by any means, it’s the quality AND quantity of the information that makes this blog what it is. Author David Pinto – who spent 10 years as lead researcher in the 90’s for ESPN’s Baseball Tonight – now devotes all of his time to gathering hot topics from around the horn and posting them on Musings, along with his own special take on each. But perhaps the best part of the site is Pinto’s links to the hundreds of other baseball sites out there. With so much good stuff to click on, you might as well stick around and play two.

7. The Tao of Stieb
If you’re like TSJ and are a diehard Blue Jays fan, than ‘Tao’ is the path you should follow. But share your comments only if you dare – the regular hitters on the message boards will take you out of the park if you don’t have good command of your stuff.
(Honourable mention also goes out to another solid Blue Jays Blog – Drunkjaysfans.com)

6. Razzball
Attention Fantasy Baseball Owners: Razzball is the site for you. The unbelievably in-depth blog site prides itself on giving ‘fantasy baseball advice’, when in all actuality, it does much, much more. These guys clearly have a lot of time on their hands which translates into a fantasy baseball funpark, complete with daily comprehensive breakdowns of just about every guy in the Majors that you won’t want to miss out on.

5. Morgan Ensberg’s Baseball IQ
Ensberg – who retired two years ago following a 7-year career in the Majors with Houston, San Diego and New York (AL) – has launched this personal blog in conjunction with him making the switch to the broadcast booth as an analyst for College Baseball on ESPNU. Surprisingly and refreshingly honest, Ensberg is committed to seeking out advice and criticism from his readers about his new-found craft and dedicates himself to replying to each and every comment posted on his site. Can’t say that about Tim McCarver.

4. Beyond the Boxscore
Beyond the Boxscore is a definite must stop for hardcore stats junkies. Tying in Sabermetrics to their stylings, this site goes deep where others merely land on the warning track.

3. HardballTalk
Part of the NBCSports.com family, this blog features daily posts from renowned writer Craig Calcaterra – who recently gave up being a full-time lawyer/part-time baseball blogger to someone who now devotes all of his time and energies to all things baseball. He’s an exceptional writer who’s now ‘living the dream’, and it’s reflected in his work.

2. Big League Stew
Of all the major sports websites out there, Yahoo!’s ‘Big League Stew’ MLB blog is my personal favorite. Edited by Kevin Kaduk (aka ‘Duk), the blog provides the perfect mix of current info with a healthy dose of humor – and not the toilet bowl variety either – making this a must-read daily.

1. MLB Trade Rumors
This site has become a fixture of mine for any news and analysis surrounding player movement, contract talks or trade speculation. With curious topics and links to a wide-range of related stories on other sites, MLB Trade Rumors is basically a one-stop shop for up-to-the-minute team and player info and opinion.

Any blogs out there that I missed which are on your Top 10?
